The manuscript collection of the Aitmatov Institute of Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic is one of the oldest scientific departments of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. It was created as a result of long-term collecting activity of more than a generation of enthusiasts, scientists, expeditions of institutes of social sciences, acquisition by purchase and donations of collectors, private individuals, personal archives of famous scientists, representatives of creative intelligentsia. The Manuscript Collection is a single centre for the collection, preservation, systematization, research and publication of folkloristic, historical, ethnographic, linguistic and other materials, as well as monuments of Eastern literacy.

The Turkestan Collection is a unique historical source. It consists of 594 volumes and reflects the history of the Turkic peoples of Central Asia from the second half of the 13th to the beginning of the 20th century. It contains materials of Turkestan and the Turkic peoples on military, economic, socio-political, spiritual and cultural, religious and geographical topics.
